SFO on the international frontline of digital forensics

Digital forensic specialists from around the world recently gathered for a two-week training course in Florida, to hear from leading experts on the latest mobile forensic investigation techniques.

Principal Electronic Forensic Investigator at the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) Jung Son was one of the lead trainers at the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists (IACIS) event. Jung led the iOS module for the Mobile Device Forensics (MDF) course which was attended by over 100 forensic specialists from 72 agencies spanning from the US, Canada, Australia and Germany.

Jung, formerly with the New Zealand Police High Tech Crime Unit provides digital forensic investigation services, which include evidence acquisition, evidence analysis, malware analysis, reporting, and expert witness testimony.

Jung says, “As a digital forensic investigator, the use of technology and electronic devices is crucial in today's investigations. With the widespread use of technology and electronic devices, it's important to realise that these devices often know more about us than we know about ourselves. These devices often contain valuable information that can be used to uncover the truth in a case.”

“One of the biggest challenges we face when working with digital devices is the constantly evolving technology. We need to stay up-to-date with the latest tools and techniques to ensure that we can analyse data from all types of devices. Additionally, we need to be aware of the potential risks, such as data encryption or password protection, and take steps to overcome them.”

“Attending conferences like this provides a valuable opportunity to share knowledge, collaborate with international experts, and stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques in the field. It's always enlightening to learn from other professionals in the field and incorporate their ideas and strategies into SFO’s best practices and we will continue to collaborate with experts from around the globe.”

New Zealand plays an important role in the international financial crime busting community. With its advanced technological infrastructure and highly skilled professionals, it has become a hub for cutting-edge fraud investigations.

SFO Director Karen Chang said, “This is a great example of SFO’s strength of expertise and world leading capabilities. It also highlights our commitment to building connections with domestic and international partners as we collectively focus on disrupting and deterring serious fraud and corruption.”
