SFO seeking feedback on Long-term Insights Briefing topic

The Serious Fraud Office is seeking feedback to help develop a Long-term Insights Briefing that explores how we can tackle emerging trends in fraud and corruption.

Long-term Insights Briefings are a requirement for agencies under the Public Service Act 2020 and are part of the duty of stewardship of the public service to look at future challenges and opportunities for New Zealand.

Your input will help to shape our Briefing: Staying ahead of the curve – Responding to emerging trends in detecting fraud and corruption in New Zealand.

Why are we consulting?

Government agencies are required under the Public Service Act 2020 to produce Long-term Insights Briefings. The Briefings make available to the public:

  • information about medium and long-term trends, risks and opportunities that affect or may affect New Zealand and New Zealand society
  • information and impartial analysis, including policy options for responding to these matters.

Topic for consultation

This paper will take stock of how we detect fraud and corruption. It will assess international best practice and what the future of fraud and corruption detection might look like, to help ensure New Zealand stays one step ahead of those who mean us harm.

Why this topic?

While New Zealand has a reputation of being a safe place to do business, fraud offending has increased rapidly in recent years. This mirrors the global trend. Rapid technological change across fields like artificial intelligence has created new opportunities for fraudsters, while also providing advanced counter measures to thwart offending.
