New guide released to support public sector fraud prevention efforts
The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) Counter Fraud Centre has published a new guide designed to help public sector organisations develop effective counter fraud messaging.
Read our Guide to Building Effective Counter Fraud Messaging
The guide provides valuable insights on how clear and impactful communication can foster a culture of transparency and reduce the risk of fraudulent activities.
SFO Deputy Chief Executive, Strategy and Engagement, Dan Eaton emphasised the critical role of communication in preventing fraud, “Fraud prevention starts with encouraging a culture where individuals feel safe and supported to speak up if they notice anything suspicious. Strong messaging is a key element in shaping this culture, and our guide is a practical tool for organisations looking to build that proactive approach.”
The guide is tailored for risk management, internal audit, assurance, and communications teams who are instrumental in shaping their organisation’s fraud prevention framework. It also highlights how strategic messaging can act as a deterrent, discouraging potential fraudsters before they act.
Mr Eaton further highlighted the broader impact of prevention: “Proactive fraud prevention not only mitigates risks but also preserves the integrity and public trust in our institutions. By ensuring that fraud awareness and deterrence are at the forefront of communication strategies, we can significantly reduce the harm caused by fraud and corruption.”
The SFO Counter Fraud Centre remains committed to working closely with public sector organisations to strengthen their ability to prevent fraud and corruption.
